2014 Paris International Agricultural Show: ANSES opens up the doors of its laboratories

The news has been added to your library

News of 17/02/2014

The Paris International Agricultural Show (SIA) is an important showcase for ANSES, a key player in the area of health and safety. This year, the Agency opens the doors of its laboratories to you! Our scientists will invite young and old alike to take part in a number of experiments, so you can all become "scientists for a day".

Welcome to our labs!

The Agency's eleven reference laboratories conduct their work in three major areas: animal health and well-being, food safety and hygiene, and plant safety.

This year, on ANSES's stand at the Paris International Agricultural Show, our scientists will introduce you to their work, with two major themes. Through a series of experiments, they will explain to the public the methods they use to ensure that foods are safe.

In another domain, using a practical example they will explain how many infectious diseases can be transmitted from animals to humans, and how you can protect yourself.

Extracting DNA, detecting veterinary drug residues in milk, examining micro-organisms through the microscope... So put on your lab coat and gloves and become an instant scientific expert - no risk involved!

Fun with domestic hygiene

The Agency will also invite visitors into its family kitchen to learn the basics of good food hygiene and the best way to organise a refrigerator, all in a fun and informative manner.

You can take a life-size quiz to learn while playing how to read a food label, why the "use-by date" is important, whether a red bell pepper has more vitamin C than an orange, when it is important to wash your hands, etc.

A sneak peek at our digital library

And finally, fans of new technologies will get a preview unveiling of the Agency's new digital library. Tablets will be available so you can peruse many of our scientific publications, including the Bulletin de veille scientifique (in French), Bulletin épidémiologique (in French, abstracts and certain special issues in English) and our magazine EuroReference (French and English).
