Among its other missions, ANSES coordinates and supports research within its scope of expertise. This includes running the National Research Programme for Environmental and Occupational Health (PNR EST), an essential resource for acquiring the knowledge necessary to assist the authorities and for health risk assessment. In this context, a call for specific projects on the impact of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF EMF) on health has been launched today.

The potential impact of RF EMFs on health is one of the primary work topics at ANSES. To answer the questions raised by their use, ANSES has issued several expert appraisals on the health effects of electromagnetic waves. Faced with a rapid increase in publications and research work in this area and following the transfer of the Health and Radio Frequency Radiation Foundation's powers and skills to ANSES, the Agency set up a programme in 2011 to examine in depth the issues raised by radiofrequency field emissions. Further to this, it also created a permanent "Radiofrequency fields and health" working group made up of twelve independent scientific experts in charge of regularly analysing all the new scientific work on the topic which is published. ANSES also created a "Radiofrequency fields and health" dialogue committee comprised of stakeholders, which puts into perspective society's expectations on the topic. And finally, the Agency is promoting the development of new knowledge in this area through a call for research projects on RF EMF.

This call for research projects has been launched in the framework of the French national research programme for environmental and occupational health. This programme strives to encourage scientific communities to produce data which can be used in the various phases of health risk analysis and in so doing bring research and scientific expertise closer together. This call for proposals specifically targets the development of research on topics which have not yet been sufficiently highlighted in current projects, or which are only just emerging.  Projects on three main topics will therefore be especially appreciated:

  • Novel approaches to electromagnetic hypersensitivity
  • Electromagnetic field metrology
  • Exposure characterisation

This call for proposals is funded by the proceeds of the French tax of radiofrequency transmitters, which totals € 2 M per year.

ANSES, committed to showcasing these studies, organises two sessions a year during its Scientific Conferences cycle dedicated to feedback on projects financed by PNR EST, at which time the research teams can present their work to the public. The next session of the Scientific Conferences will be held on 13 November 2013 at ANSES.
