Élisabeth Claverie de Saint Martin has been appointed Director General of ANSES by decree dated 15 May 2026. She will take up her post on 18 May. She succeeds Benoit Vallet and Gilles Salvat, who had been Acting Director General since November 2025.

The appointment of Élisabeth Claverie de Saint Martin comes at the end of her term as Chair and Chief Executive Officer of CIRAD, a public research institution operating in over 60 countries. Her arrival at the helm of ANSES follows an inter-ministerial career characterised by a strong international dimension and in-depth knowledge of global issues. Convinced of the importance of underpinning public policy with independent and robust scientific work, she embodies an integrated approach to health issues, which echoes ANSES’s “One Health” mission.

During her parliamentary hearings, Élisabeth Claverie de Saint Martin stated:

“It will be a great honour and a great responsibility for me to help drive the Agency forward, scientifically, internationally and in the service of public policy. I believe that ANSES can contribute to the quality and vitality of democratic debate.”

Career

Élisabeth Claverie de Saint Martin is a career civil servant. Having joined the civil service in 1993, she has built an international and cross-ministerial career entirely dedicated to public service.

She began her career in the field of research and higher education, first as a lecturer at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and then at the University of Paris 5 Descartes, where she worked on economic modelling, game theory and decision-making under uncertainty.

A graduate of the École nationale d’administration and the École Normale Supérieure Paris Saclay-Cachan, Élisabeth Claverie de Saint Martin subsequently joined the diplomatic service. She developed recognised expertise in European affairs, security issues and global challenges, holding posts in France and abroad, notably in Brussels, Warsaw, Madrid and then in Washington, where she worked with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

She then joined the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD), where she served successively as Deputy Director General in charge of Research and Strategy and, as of 2021, as Chair and Chief Executive Officer. There, she led an organisation of 1,800 staff operating in over 60 countries, at the heart of agricultural research and international cooperation.
