French Observatory for Pesticide Residues
In November 2003, the French Ministries of Health, Agriculture, Consumer Affairs and Ecology created the French Observatory for Pesticide Residues (ORP). This observatory aims to collect, analyse and exploit information on the presence of pesticides in different environments. It takes into account pesticides in the broad sense, that is, plant protection products, biocides, and external antiparasitics for veterinary and human use.

In March 2008, as part of its first action plan (2006-2008), the French Observatory for Pesticide Residues commissioned a multidisciplinary expert group to provide an overview of available knowledge concerning the exposure, contamination levels and factors determiningthe exposure of the general population to pesticides. These efforts led to publication of the report “Exposure of the general population to pesticide residues in France” in October 2010.
Long used in the French Caribbean to control the banana weevil, chlordecone can be harmful to human health. ANSES has conducted several studies to assess the chlordecone risk for the French Caribbean population, in particular through the consumption of contaminated food. These have led to toxicity reference values and maximum tolerable contamination limits being defined for foodstuffs. Assessing dietary exposure has also made it possible to formulate food consumption recommendations for local populations.
