National Research Programme on Environmental and Occupational Health: ANSES issues two calls for research projects for 2018

Each year, as part of the National Research Programme on Environmental and Occupational Health (PNR EST), ANSES issues its calls for research projects on environmental and occupational health themes. For the 2018 edition of PNR EST, two calls for projects are being issued today, and will receive total funding of around eight million euros. This amount is higher than for the previous edition, as the Ministry of Ecological and Inclusive Transition has decided to allocate a further two million euros for research projects on endocrine disruptors.
To develop knowledge with which to support public policy-making and health risk assessment work, ANSES runs the National Research Programme on Environmental and Occupational Health (PNR EST).
The 2018 calls for projects focus on the assessment and analysis of environmental risks to human health (general population and workers), on risks to ecosystems and the quality of different environments. These calls for projects therefore cover the health risks associated with chemical, physical and biological agents, and questions raised by the rapid development of certain technologies.
The first call for projects, of a general nature, focuses on a variety of themes:
- risks associated with physical agents (sound waves, vibrations, non-ionising radiation);
- risks associated with nanoparticles and mineral fibres;
- risks associated with chemical agents, particularly endocrine disruptors;
- risks associated with biological agents;
- exposure to plant protection products;
- risks associated with emerging contaminants and waste;
- risks associated with air quality;
- the impact of climate change and vector control;
- cancer and the environment;
- human and social sciences approaches to health and environmental risks.
This call for projects is funded, via ANSES, by the Ministry of Ecological and Inclusive Transition, the Ministry of Labour, and three other partners: the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME), the multi-agency thematic institute for cancer (ITMO Cancer) as part of the national Cancer Plan, and the Ministry of Agriculture under the French Ecophyto Plan (in cooperation with the French Agency for Biodiversity). Note that because this year the Ministry of Ecological and Inclusive Transition has decided to allocate a further two million euros to the PNR EST to support research on endocrine disruptors, particular attention will be paid to projects dealing with this topic.
The second call for projects,devoted to the theme of "Radiofrequencies and health", focuses on four themes:
- research on mechanisms of action of radiofrequencies at the cellular level;
- research on the physiological or health effects of radiofrequencies;
- electromagnetic hypersensitivity;
- characterisation of exposure.
Financed from the proceeds of a tax on radiofrequency transmitters, its aim is to develop research actions to support expert appraisal and broaden the number of scientists working on this subject.
The National Research Programme on Environmental and Occupational Health aims to encourage scientific communities to produce data of use in the different phases of the analysis of risks to health and ecosystems, thereby bringing research and scientific expert appraisal closer together.
In particular, these calls for projects develop the research priorities for the national environmental health, occupational health, cancer and Ecophyto plans, and by doing so, provide support for public policy-making. They are aimed at research questions posed by the ministries and State agencies affected by these topics.
As part of its efforts to promote this work, every year ANSES organises Scientific Conferences to enable the research teams to present the work funded under the PNR EST. The most recent Scientific Conferences, open to stakeholders from the voluntary and professional sectors, scientists, public institutions, etc., took place on 16 October 2017 on the theme of "Effects of compounds alone or in a mixture: from biomarkers to models".
