Philippe Bas, a former Minister for Health, has been appointed Chairman of the Board of Administrators of the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES), formed through the merger of AFSSA with AFSSET.
Philippe Bas, aged 52, graduated from both the Institut d'Etudes Politiques and the Ecole Nationale d'Administration (in the 'Louise Michel' class) and has held high public office in several capacities, so that he has been directly involved in issues for which ANSES is responsible and that will be critical for its future.
He joined the French Conseil d'Etat (Council of State) in 1987 with the rank of Maître des requêtes (an official advisory position) and worked on the staff of various ministers from 1993 to 1997, including Deputy Chief of Staff for Simone Veil, Minister of State and Minister for Social, Health and Urban Affairs; Adviser to Philippe Douste-Blazy, Minister for Health; and Chief of Staff for Jacques Barrot, Minister for Labour and Social Affairs.
He was appointed Social Affairs Adviser to the office of the French President in 1997, Assistant Secretary General to the Presidency in 2000, and Secretary General in 2002. He was also made a Councillor of State in 1999.
In 2005, Philippe Bas was appointed Minister for Social Security, Senior Citizens, the Disabled and the Family, then Minister for Health and Solidarity in 2007. From 2007 to 2010, Philippe Bas chaired the Administrative Board of the French Office for Immigration and Integration.
In 2008 he was elected to the General Council of the La Manche département, of which he is now a Vice-President. He was made a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur in 2009.
On being appointed, Philippe Bas declared: “At a time when society quite legitimately has high expectations for public health, I consider this appointment to be a great honour and a serious responsibility I should like to dedicate my mandate to enhancing the Agency's independence and transparency Together with the entire Board of Administrators, I shall endeavour to ensure that ANSES is and remains a benchmark in terms of scientific expertise for the benefit of our fellow citizens.”
