Research on Bluetongue

The role of ANSES

Keywords : Bluetongue, Animal diseases, Animal health

The emergence in Europe in 2006 of serotypes 8 and 1 of Bluetongue (BT), a viral disease which includes many different serotypes, raised the problem of identifying them and determing control measures. ANSES is working on a number of short, medium and long-term research projects to provide the most suitable response to farmers' needs as swiftly as possible.

Current research

This research is conducted in partnership with other French and foreign research institutes, as well as with State departments and professional federations and organisations. The scientists on the "Physiopathology of orbiviruses" team at the ANSES/INRA/ENVA joint research unit (UMR) are doing research, in particular on:

  • an assessment of the genetic diversity of strains found in the Mediterranean basin in comparison with that of non-European strains (molecular epidemiology),
  • the development of molecular diagnostics tools,
  • an evaluation of the levels of protection obtained by means of recombinant vaccines (adenovirus) but also ISCOM (Immune stimulating complex) and pseudoparticle vaccines,
  • development of an innovative strategy for producing multivalent immunising principles to enable simultaneous protection of animals against several serotypes while making it possible to distinguish between vaccinated and infected animals,
  • while continuing work on the pathogenesis of infection by characterising the properties of non-structural proteins and the role they play in natural immunity.
