Given the health effects that can be caused by excessive sugar consumption, ANSES recommends not consuming more than 100 g of sugar per day (excluding lactose and galactose) and not more than one sweetened beverage.

In France, the reference database for the nutritional composition of foods is managed by ANSES. A food composition table is published on the Internet via the ANSES-CIQUAL website. The table provides energy values and the fat, fatty acid, carbohydrate, sugar, protein, salt, vitamin and mineral content of more than 2800 foods representative of those consumed in France. The table is one of the most comprehensive tables of its kind in Europe.

A balanced diet is based on individual habits but also implies that the foods available to the consumer have a satisfactory nutritional composition. In order to monitor the quality of the food supply, OQALI (initially the French Observatory of Food Quality), provided for in the 2006-2010 National Programme for Nutrition and Health (PNNS 2), was created in February 2008 by the ministries of agriculture, health and consumer affairs. It is jointly implemented by ANSES and INRA.
