Antimicrobial resistance in animal health: 2024 review
To mark World Antibiotic Awareness Week, ANSES is publishing the annual results from the schemes it coordinates on the monitoring of veterinary medicinal products and on antibiotic resistance in bacteria collected from animals.
Antimicrobial resistance remains a major issue for both human and animal health. Research carried out by ANSES has confirmed the link between exposure to antibiotics and resistance of bacteria to these medicines. The Agency coordinates three schemes to help combat antimicrobial resistance in animal health:
- Monitoring of sales and uses of antimicrobials in veterinary medicine,
- The French surveillance network for antimicrobial resistance in pathogenic bacteria of animal origin (Resapath),
- The European scheme for monitoring antimicrobial resistance in the food chain.
Overall, the results for 2024 show a continuation of the trends observed in recent years. The efforts made to reduce animal exposure to antibiotics and resistance of bacteria since the start of the EcoAntibio plan in 2012 need to be sustained.
