ANSES, 10 years of action

1 July 2020, ANSES celebrates its 10-year anniversary.
“The creation of ANSES combines the guarantee of independent public health expertise with openness to the concerns of civil society and the risks that each person is exposed to in their everyday life.”

Excerpt from ANSES’s press release of 1 July 2010

ANSES was founded in 2010 through a merger of the French Food Safety Agency (AFSSA) and the French Agency for Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (AFSSET).
This new agency inherited the missions, means and staff of both agencies. It also has inherited their achievements and values – scientific expertise, independence, openness in expert assessment – in order to apply them to a more global and cross-cutting perspective on health issues.

From 2010 to 2020, health and safety challenges have intensified and ANSES’s missions have also expanded, bolstering its role as a benchmark agency for scientific expert assessment in support of public decision-making. Man's impact on our ecosystems and the globalisation of health threats raise increasingly complex issues. To take health crises head-on, Roger Genet, Director General of ANSES, has called for the decompartmentalization of methods and for working without borders in every sense of the word. To meet the growing expectations of our fellow citizens, ANSES has also called for new approaches to the role of scientific expert assessment in public decision-making.
