The Ciqual nutritional composition table

The French reference database on the nutritional composition of foods is managed by ANSES. This resource, known as the Ciqual composition table, is made available free of charge on the Ciqual website. Who is it intended for? Where do the data come from? What features are available? All the answers to these questions can be found in this article.

One of the most comprehensive tables in Europe

The Ciqual table provides the fat, fatty acid, carbohydrate, total sugar (as well as individual sugar profiles), protein, salt, vitamin and mineral content of 3484 foods representative of those consumed in France. This makes it one of the most comprehensive nutritional composition tables in Europe.

A tool based on a wide range of data

Through its OQALI food observatory, ANSES carries out annual sampling and analysis programmes and collects data from operators, distributors and inter-professional bodies. All these data are then incorporated into the Ciqual table. Data on nutrients mentioned on the nutrition labelling of processed foods are also collected by OQALI and added to this database.

An invaluable tool for numerous users

The Ciqual table is a source of reference information for:

  • health professionals (nutritionists, dietitians), who use it to devise personalised menus and recommendations for their patients,

  • developers of nutrition applications and software,

  • agrifood professionals for nutrition labelling,

  • researchers in nutritional epidemiology

  • individuals taking an active interest in their diet.

It is also a fundamental tool for ANSES's risk assessments in the field of nutrition. The data in the Ciqual table and the results of the food consumption studies it conducts regularly (INCA and Albane) provide the Agency with knowledge of the nutrient intakes of the French population that is essential to guide public policymaking in the field of nutrition.

A tool that can be accessed free of charge and downloaded in full

All the data are provided via the Ciqual website and available as OpenData.

A wide range of features are available:

  • searches for nutritional composition data according to food,

  • searches for foods that provide a particular nutrient, filtering the results by food group,

  • exports of food data sheets,

  • access to data sources,

  • subscription to the Ciqual newsletter.
