Alcohol-based gels and solutions used as hand sanitisers are disinfectants designed to remove bacteria or viruses from healthy skin. They are biocidal products, and as such are subject to the European Regulation on these products. ANSES is responsible for assessing and issuing marketing authorisations for these types of products. Following their massive use in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Agency issued an opinion on the effectiveness criteria for hand sanitisers. What properties make them effective against viruses or bacteria? Can they replace hand washing? How should they be stored?

Microplastics range in size from 5 millimetres down to a few hundred nanometres, making them 70 times smaller than the thickness of a human hair. Microplastics are ubiquitous in the environment: they are found in air, in homes, in rivers, on land and in oceans. Although they occur naturally in aquatic ecosystems, their proliferation, which results from excessive nutrient inputs to lakes and rivers, is becoming a growing international concern because of the ecological, health and economic consequences. This article provides some insights on this family of bacteria, which is gaining increasing attention.

Pesticides Contamination of air by pesticides

Air pollution caused by pesticides is one of the components of atmospheric pollution. However, it is still less well documented than the contamination of water or food by these same substances. There is currently no national surveillance plan or regulatory value for pesticide contamination of the various air environments (outdoor and indoor air). Because improving air quality is a major public health issue, a national plan for the reduction of atmospheric pollutant emissions (PREPA) has been implemented as a roadmap for achieving this, through some 50 actions. These include the national exploratory campaign to measure pesticides in outdoor air (CNEP), led by ANSES alongside Ineris and the AASQA network, with a view to establishing permanent targeted monitoring at national level.

Protection Feminine Feminine hygiene products: composition and toxic shock syndrome, our recommendations

Feminine hygiene products are consumer products used during periods to absorb menstrual flow. They are prompting many questions and women are increasingly concerned about the risks associated with their use. ANSES was asked to assess the safety of feminine hygiene products and concluded that there are low concentrations of chemicals in the composition of feminine hygiene products such as tampons, menstrual cups and sanitary towels. However, the Agency also reminds users of the importance of complying with the hygiene rules associated with the use of these products.
