What are the most common causes of serious cases of accidental poisoning in children?

Triphenyl phosphate, an endocrine disruptor for species in the environment

Triphenyl phosphate is a substance used as a flame retardant and/or plasticiser in a wide variety of materials and equipment. In view of its endocrine-disrupting properties for species in the environment, which have been determined mainly in fish, the Agency is proposing to identify triphenyl phosphate as a substance of very high concern, within the meaning of the European REACH Regulation. The aim is to better regulate the use of this chemical on the European continent. This ANSES proposal is available for public consultation on the website of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) until 15 April, to give stakeholders the opportunity to provide additional data.

Stepping up surveillance of the oriental fruit fly to prevent it from becoming established in France

Bactrocera dorsalis , commonly known as the oriental fruit fly, is one of the most destructive pests for many fruit and vegetable production sectors. In its opinion, ANSES considers that the likelihood of its long-term establishment in mainland France is not negligible. To be able to detect any outbreak of infestation as quickly as possible, ANSES recommends stepping up the surveillance of crops and imported goods in Mediterranean areas near ports and airports, beyond what is provided for in the current regulations.

Proposed hazard classification for two diphenylamines

ANSES is proposing a harmonised classification under the European CLP Regulation for two diphenylamines: BNPA and Benzenamine, N-phenyl-, reaction products with 2,4,4-trimethylpentene. Used in industrial settings as well as by professionals and private individuals, these substances are found in lubricants, greases, cutting fluids, hydraulic fluids and plastics. These diphenylamines are toxic to aquatic organisms and can damage human fertility and development. The public consultation, which opened on the website of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) on 4 March 2024, enables all interested parties to comment on these two classification proposals and provide any additional information they may have on these substances.

ANSES at the 2024 Paris Agricultural Show!

The combined effects of climate disruption and human activities have created disturbances in the Earth’s ecosystems that are impacting the health of living organisms. Allergenic plants, mosquitoes and ticks have been spreading across France, affecting human and animal health. In forests, gardens and crops, plant pests and other harmful organisms are acclimatising rapidly. This year on the ANSES stand, we invite you to come take a closer look at these invasive species, so you can recognise them and protect yourself. Our programme for this year includes observation of living organisms, games and discussions with our scientists. And in a nod to this year's Olympic Games, ANSES will also provide an opportunity to learn while moving your body.

PFASs: very persistent chemicals

Over the years, these properties of persistence, mobility and accumulation in living organisms have led to the human population being increasingly exposed to PFASs. According to EFSA (2020) , seafood, eggs and meat are the foods that contribute most to PFOS and PFOA exposure. Drinking water can also be a source of exposure, as can indoor and outdoor air, dust and contaminated soil. Occupational exposure to PFASs can occur in a number of industrial sectors, including the chemical industry, textile processing and electronics manufacturing, as well as from their use in fire-fighting. The highest blood contamination levels are found among workers at PFAS manufacturing sites (ECHA, 2023).

Pesticides in tap water

As they disperse in the environment after application, the active substances in pesticides can degrade into one or more other compounds called "metabolites". Some of these substances then end up in drinking water. In order to guarantee consumer health, ANSES provides the Directorate General for Health with scientific benchmarks that are invaluable for monitoring tap water quality. To do this, the Agency uses a method for identifying those pesticide metabolites whose presence in drinking water warrants priority attention.

Asbestos: still a very topical problem

Asbestos was used on a massive scale for more than a century in various sectors including construction and public works, because of its specific properties and low extraction cost. Classified as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 1977, its use in France has been prohibited since 1997. However, many materials containing asbestos are still currently in place, constituting sources of exposure for workers and the general population.
